How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

How Getting a Tattoo Works

To understand how tattoo removal works, you must also understand how getting a tattoo works. Once tattoo ink is logged into the middle layer of your skin, your body’s immune system sends white blood cells to the tattooed area to pull out as many ink particles as possible. Larger particles that the cells could not break down are left behind leaving the tattoo design. Over time, those cells break the larger particles down which causes natural fading.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Tattoo removal works by breaking apart those larger ink particles layer by layer. Your body’s white blood cells can then carry away the smaller broken down particles quicker. With time and continued sessions, a tattoo can be completely removed.

Laser Tattoo Removal Timeline

A typical tattoo takes about 10 – 12 treatments, spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart, to remove.

Factors that Affect Tattoo Removal

Lifestyle
Living an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking or vaping, and allowing direct sun exposure to the treated area can reduce your body’s ability to remove the ink.

General Health
Chronic health conditions and being sick are your immune system’s priority to fix. This can reduce the speed at which the ink is removed from your skin.

Age
As you age, your metabolism and immune system slow down. Younger or more active immune systems will remove ink faster.

Tattoo Location
Tattoos in high blood flow areas can be removed faster than those located further from the circulatory system.

Ink color
The color of your ink and skin tone will play a factor in the removal outcome.

Skin Tone
Your skin tone can impact the laser removal outcome and may determine the laser settings your technician uses.

Addressing Your Concerns About Pain

A dime-sized tattoo on the forearm may only take a few seconds of laser removal which would be relatively tolerable. A larger tattoo on the lower back may increase discomfort due to a longer duration of removal.

Beyond providing cold compressed air, there are other things we can do to help reduce discomfort for our clients. Below are steps we are actively taking to better your tattoo removal experience.

Managing Expectations

If you think something will hurt, you will likely increase the chance of experiencing discomfort. Most people find removal treatments to be comparable to getting a tattoo and are surprised by how quickly the treatment is completed. As always, we are here to help you through the process and you can ask for a break if you need them.

During the Treatment

Along with conscious customer care, we will provide a countdown for the test spot so that you are fully prepared when the treatment begins.

Breathing exercises such as the 4-square rhythmic breathing can help reduce discomfort.
1. Breath in slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
2. Hold your breath for a count of 4.
3. Breath out through your mouth for a count of 4.
4. Hold your breath for a count of 4.
5. Repeat.

A 2015 Randomized Controlled Trial has shown that engaging in active conversation while utilizing a squeeze ball has significantly reduced client discomfort and anxiety for patients undergoing surgery.

Our Laser: State-of-the-art Laser Technology

Laser tattoo removal is a FDA approved treatment that uses isolated laser energy to break up the pigment and color in tattoos. This is a safe and effective procedure when performed properly and has little to no side effects.

PSRx Body & Skin uses only the most state-of-the-art PicoWay® laser technology to safely remove or fade unwanted tattoos. Picosecond technology allows the laser to go in and out of the skin at a much faster rate than a Q-switch laser, which is also commonly used in the tattoo removal industry. A picosecond is a trillionth of a second! The faster rate causes the ink to break down into much smaller particles, allowing the body to digest these particles faster as well.

PicoWay® laser technology allows us to remove any color of a tattoo, anywhere on the body. The pressure wave technology of a picosecond laser also leaves the skin with less discomfort during removal and following treatment. This allows us to offer better results and a better experience for our clients.

PicoWay® Laser Technology

Our go-to laser is the Candela PicoWay®, which features three wavelengths (1064 nm, 730 nm, and 532 nm) and both resolve and full-beam capabilities. This picosecond laser effectively breaks up ink into tiny particles that are easily passed out of the body through the lymphatic system with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. With its dominant 1064 and 532 wavelengths (the wavelength that a laser platform produces out of the armature without the use of dye packs or handpieces), the PicoWay® is especially effective at treating resistant red and black ink on any skin tone.

LASER TATTOO REMOVAL AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

Let’s take a detailed look at what aftercare for laser tattoo removal involves. By following these instructions, you’ll jumpstart the laser tattoo removal healing process.

1. Keep the tattoo removal area clean and dry for the first three days.
2. After tattoo removal, using an ointment like hydrocortisone cream will help to reduce inflammation. Vitamin E Oil can also heal damaged skin cells. You can find these post tattoo removal ointments right at your local supermarket or drugstore. These ointments can also make your skin less itchy, meaning you’ll be less tempted to scratch the affected area, which is a definite no!
3. If any blisters develop that are larger than a dime, use a sterilized lancet to poke a small hole at the base of the blister to let it drain. Use an over-the-counter antibacterial ointment or cream to keep the area moisturized and speed healing. As the area is now considered an open wound.

Follow these laser tattoo removal aftercare instructions to keep your skin as healthy as possible throughout the removal process. Additionally, speak with your tattoo removal specialist for specific guidance on tattoo removal aftercare. Great post laser tattoo removal skincare will hasten healing and deliver the best results!

FAQS

Removing Your Tattoo (FAQS)
Here are the most common questions for those just getting started with their tattoo removal journey.

1. What kind of tattoos can be removed?
Thanks to our advanced PicoWay technologies, we can work on even the more challenging tattoo colors that at one time would have been impossible to eliminate from the skin. It is even an alternative for those who have tried tattoo removal before but gave up after seeing the poor results.

2. Will my tattoo be removed completely?
Most tattoos can be entirely removed using our lasers. Based on the specific characteristics of your tattoo, our laser professionals will be open with you about what level of removal is most likely to be possible for your tattoo.

3. Does it matter where my tattoo is located on my body
Where the tattoo is located on your body, and how much ink is present, does have an impact. The further away from your heart and the denser the ink, the longer it will take to remove the tattoo. For example, a tattoo on a foot can take significantly more sessions to remove than the same size and color tattoo on the chest. This is because the blood circulation is much better closer to the heart than in your foot (the same reason your feet get colder quicker than the rest of your body). The less circulation present to carry away the ink, the longer it will take to remove the tattoo.

4. Can I lighten an existing tattoo?
Many tattoo artists encourage customers to lighten an existing tattoo before covering it with a new one. This dramatically reduces any chance of the old tattoo appearing through the new one. In most cases, a minimum of three to six treatments is all that’s required to lighten an existing tattoo.

5. Will I have a scar?
Our Picoway lasers pulse is so quick that they’re able to dissolve the ink without destroying the live tissue in the process. Like running your hand over a candle very quickly, there is not enough time to burn the skin. Redness, swelling, blistering, and scabbing may follow tattoo removal laser treatments. But our laser technology combined with proper aftercare ensures that there will be no scarring.

6. Can I fade my tattoo for a cover up?
Our Tattoo removal team is among the most experienced cover up specialists in the laser tattoo removal industry and we partner with many talented coverup artist. Book a cover up fading consultation for your next cover up tattoo.

Treatment Sessions (FAQS)

We’re here to help from start to finish. Learn more about our process and what you can expect along the way

1. How long will a session take?
Laser treatment usually doesn’t take more than a few minutes, depending on the size of the tattoo, complexity, and color(s) of the tattoo. On average we can have you in and out in fifteen minutes!

2. Will I need multiple tattoo removal sessions to completely remove my tattoo?
Removing a tattoo is a fading process that requires several treatments scheduled six to eight weeks apart. Black inks usually respond more quickly than bright colors because they absorb the light better. The depth, ink color, and amount of ink, as well as the location of the tattoo, are all determining factors in how quickly we’ll be able to get your tattoo off. Depending on your preference for fading or full removal, the process can take between 5 -12 sessions

3. How long until my tattoo is gone?
Using our advanced Pico Laser technology, most tattoos are removed in as few as 10 visits, with sessions scheduled eight weeks apart. The PSRx Body & Skin professionals will take great care in establishing your personalized treatment plan and expectations based on the specific characteristics of your skin and your tattoo.

4. I’m not big on pain. Does tattoo removal hurt?
Most patients say that the laser treatment feels like being snapped by a rubber band and that the discomfort is roughly equivalent to having a tattoo applied. Here at PSRx Body & Skin we focus on making the procedure as comfortable as possible. In preparation for a laser procedure doctors recommend that non-aspirin products be used for minor pain. Don’t use aspirin or Ibuprofen as this can produce bruising after treatment. We are also unique in using the Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling system. We cool the skin before, during, and after the procedure, reducing pain while decreasing thermal temperature.

5. Is this treatment safe?
Laser treatment is a safe and effective method for removing tattoos when it’s performed by a certified technician trained to use tattoo removal lasers.

6. Will my insurance pay for this?
Currently, this procedure is not included as a health insurance benefit. We do offer financing and payment plan options, call for more information.

Our Technology (FAQS)

Learn more about our PicoWay® laser technology and how we use it to safely remove or fade unwanted tattoos.

How exactly do laser tattoo removal treatments work?
Our lasers deliver very short pulses of high-intensity light into the treated area. The tattoo inks and pigments then selectively absorb the light without destroying the normal surrounding skin tissue in the process. The tattoo is dissolved into smaller ink particles that are harmlessly removed by your body’s immune system in the weeks following treatment.

So wait, my body clears the shattered ink?
Two key processes break up the ink – the pigment in your tattoo will absorb the energy from the laser and break apart; also, the incredibly fast pulse (6-billionths of a second!) and energy of the laser will cause the ink to shatter like a sugar cube breaking apart. Once the ink is broken down by the laser, your body responds by moving fluid to the area to help flush away the ink. This immune-response will be obvious in the form of some swelling and redness in the area. Over the next few weeks, the ink will be flushed away. This doesn’t happen overnight. Removing a tattoo takes several sessions.

Why is 3 wavelengths important?
It gives the ability to remove tattoo colors from across the spectrum. Most lasers operate at only a single wavelength, making it hard to ‘see’ colors that fall outside of that wavelength and therefore not optimal for removing certain colors of tattoos or working on certain skin tones. PicoWay 3-Wavelength technology operates at 532nm, 785nm and 1064 nm respectively, covering all the colors in the rainbow.

REMOVING EYEBROW & COSMETIC TATTOOS

Eyebrow Tattoo Removal
Eyebrow tattoos are commonly seen on people who desire thick, full eyebrows yet do not want to fill them in with makeup every day. However, styles change, and these tattoos can also change in color over time, which are among the reasons why we see clients who want to get eyebrow tattoo removal.

Microblading
A common method where the eyebrow tattoo artist applies hair-like strokes of ink under the dermis layer of your skin using a static blade rather than a tattoo machine. The result from microblading is typically natural looking and lasts for about three years. If a mistake is made during the application, eyebrow tattoo removal can help remove the undesired ink.

Traditional Eyebrow Tattooing
Some cosmetic tattoo artists choose to use traditional tattoo machines to apply eyebrow tattoos. Brow tattoos applied using this method are typically more permanent; as with all tattoos, results vary by artist. If your results do not meet your expectations, eyebrow tattoo removal may be worth exploring.
